PLEASE go to your local hobby store before you buy any R/C model. I have 9 R/C airplanes and belong to a club.
I have seen many people loose interest in the hobby because they buy a model that is a piece of junk and crash it.
Any local R/C club will have instructors that will show you how to fly R/C so you do not crash.

join a local model flying club and get an electric glider or a trainer 40 when you have passed the a certificate. Dont try and teach your self it is dangerous and expensive

Go to that very large store(Hate using their name) go to the toy section,they have battery powered R/C aircraft. $50,great for a beginner.

if you want park flyers, then the simplest one would be good for a beginner. however, i am an rc vet. ,my computer background is a p51, app. 6 ft wingspan rc. i love airplanes. i have been to airshows and some of the best flyers are kids, believe it or not. i saw a 12 yr old take first place in RC glider meet. if they make a piper cub in that size, it would make a good starter. start him on rudder and elevator, after he gets used to it, then you can introduce him to ailerons too,. but as one above says, find an RC club. they will help him and probably supply the field to fly on. ha could start on a standard size piper j3. just as easy to fly. good luck. he will enjoy. but it does not come cheap. note above. i meant 5 ft wingspan also, you can go to a bookstore ar anywhere they sell magazines, and get an RC magazine,. lots and lots of stuff in there.

Air Hogs Storm Launcher, it’s a Air / Land / Water flying boat! There’s a couple of videos on YouTube about these, and mods you can make to make them better. They’re simple high-impact closed-cell foam, with electric engines. Should take some abuse. One minor irritation is that they sell the battery SEPARATE, you pay $49 for the STorm Launcher craft, then have to buy the $40 or so battery setup. Don’t know WHY they did it that way, but it’d be about $100 or so. But they can run on land, on water like a hydroplane boat, or it’ll fly thru the air, which is amazing. Check out the video. With this R/C, he can fly it, or drive it. Pretty slick! Soon as I get some extra money, I’m probably gonna get one myself.

Much more durable and flys with ailerons like a real plane. I have flown this very aircraft into trees and it just popped off the wings and flew again in less than 5 minutes.
You can also get all kinds of spare parts for this one. Every megatech plane I have owned hasn’t worked well and was ver y hard to repair is it wasn’t “standard parts”.

I would say the “Avion Micro Bi-plane” because it seems to be less fragile than the others… Airplanes aren’t easy to fly though
